在英语中，more 是一个用法非常丰富且灵活的单词，可以用作副词、代词或形容词（限定词），而且每种词性的固定搭配不少，如 much/a lot/far more，more and more，more or less，no more than，what's more，以及今天要讲的 more of，等等。

More 是 much，many 或 a lot 的比较级，作形容词时，因为 much 修饰不可数名词，many 修饰可数名词，因此 more 可以修饰可数和不可数名词，这是它的灵活表现之一，例如：

We need more financial support from local government to build a hotel on the site.

我们需要当地政府提供更多的财政支持，以便在现场建造一家酒店。

More local people oppose building a chemical plant around the park.

更多的当地人反对在公园周围建化工厂。

跟其他可以作形容词或限定词的不定代词一样，如 some，any 或 several 等，more 也可以作不定代词，表示更大或更多的数或量，这也是它的灵活性之一，例如：

My wife earns much more than I do.

我妻子挣的比我多得多。

The local government should spend more on people's well-being and children's education.

地方政府应该在民生和儿童教育上投入更多。

从以上得知，此时的 more 可以是不同事物之间的比较，此时用 than 引出比较的第二部分，如 my wife earns 和 I earn，也可以是同个事物之间的比较，此时可以不用 than，因为听众或读者可以根据语境来理解，例如第二句可以改为：

The local government should spend more than it did before on people's well-being and children's education.

而当 more 与 of 连用成 more of 时，所涉及的比较就仅限于 of 后面所接的事物，也就是比较限于同一个事物，表示该事物中更多的部分，例如：

I can't stand much more of the noise.

我可承受不了太多这种噪音了。

More of us will be able to afford to go abroad this summer due to the good sales figures.

由于良好的销售数据，我们中的更多人将能够负担得起今年夏天出国的费用。

有时 more of 也用来表示更大的程度，常用于搭配 see more of sb 中，例如：

We hope we'll see more of each other.

我们希望能多见面。

由以上可以看出，因为 more 和 more of 都可以表示不定的概念而相近，但因为比较范畴的不同而相差很远，而其他的属性一样，如都可以指代可数名词和不可数名词等。

不定代词因为指代不定，所以当它们作主语时，要根据具体的上下文来判断谓语动词的单复数形式，这个规则也适用于作不定代词的 more，例如：

More of them are required.

它们的大部分被需要。

More of it is required.

它的大部分被需要。

然而有的时候 more of 也可以跟 than 连用，用于固定搭配 be more of sth1 than sth2，用于表示一种描述人或事物的方式比另一种更好或更准确，此时的 more of 是一个整体，意为“不是 sth2，而更像是 sth1；与其说是 sth2，不如说是 sth1”等，例如：

The business turned out to be more of a team coordination and cooperation than work.

事实证明，这项业务与其说是工作，不如说是团队协调与合作。

The role of the computer analysts may be more of facilitator than designer, helping to realise the users' wishes.

计算机分析师的角色可能更多地是引导者而不是设计师，帮助实现用户的愿望。
