演讲人 Angela Lee Duckworth 在哈佛本科毕业后，进入牛津攻读神经科学，后获得宾大心理学博士学位，从履历上看，这是标准的「学霸人赢」配置，但是她却说，自己从小就经常被老爸念叨：你根本不是什么天才！（这位爸爸，你是魔鬼吗……）

然而，就是这样被定性为「非天才」的她，拿到博士学位，还获得了美国跨领域最高奖项——麦克阿瑟奖。这个奖项有个别称，「天才奖」，Genius Grant。是不是有些讽刺？

智商低的人，就像野百合一样，永远没有春天吗？

Angela 是突破智商限制的特殊个例吗？

如果不是智商，是什么让她和其他普通人获得成功？有没有实验数据证明？

在 Angela 27 岁时，她辞去麦肯锡的企业管理咨询这项很有挑战性的工作，转而投身了更具挑战性的教育事业。她在纽约教七年级学生数学，发现了这样一个情况：一些 IQ 高的聪明孩子，成绩并不出色；相反，有些智商水平一般的同学，却取得了优异的成绩。

When I was 27 years old, I left a very demanding job in management consulting for a job that was even more demanding: teaching. I went to teach seventh graders math in the New York City public schools. And like any teacher, I made quizzes and tests. I gave out homework assignments. When the work came back, I calculated grades.

quizzes and tests

quiz 和 test 的区别是，quiz 多指花费时间较短的「小测验」，或者「问答类比赛」，很多时候不计入最后成绩。

• 这个词组含义很多，在文章中的意思是「布置作业」，听完老师布置的作业，课堂哀嚎声一片~
• 如果你想把新课本发给各位同学，也是用这个词组

What struck me was that IQ was not the only difference between my best and my worst students. Some of my strongest performers did not have stratospheric IQ scores. Some of my smartest kids weren't doing so well.

• 英文释义：(of a thought or an idea) to come into sb's mind suddenly （想法或念头）突然想到；一下子想起；猛地意识到
• 这个单词之前出现在训练营的作业中，很多同学不知道 struck 其实是 strike 的过去式、过去分词。
• 词义非常、非常丰富，比如「罢工」、「击打」，在这里却是指「某个想法突然蹦出来」。
• The solution struck me immediately.
• 我突然想到了这个解决办法。

金牌写作句型

• 意为「坚信」，可以替换撞车频率极高的 I believe
• I was convinced that we were doing the right thing.
• 我确信我们做的事情是正确的。

七年级的数学并不难，只要大家肯动脑，肯花时间，肯投入。听到这儿，我不由感慨，要是当时知道这一点该多好。那会儿觉得好难好难的题，现在已经不成什么问题。就像，五年后重新回顾现在自己的处境，应该也会有类似感受。

这样的故事频繁上演，Angela 认为我们应该从学习动力和心理学的角度，更深刻地理解学习着的我们和学习这件事。于是，她决定攻读心理学博士学位，和研究团队做了大量的研究。比如，他们去西点军校观察哪些学员能够胜出，研究拼字比赛获胜者有什么特质，此外，他们还去企业调查哪些员工最优秀，挣钱最多。

After several more years of teaching, I came to the conclusion that what we need in education is a much better understanding of students and learning from a motivational perspective, from a psychological perspective. In education, the one thing we know how to measure best is IQ. But what if doing well in school and in life depends on much more than your ability to learn quickly and easily?

通过对不同行业人士的调研，她发现，有一种性格特征和成功密切相关，不是智商、情商，不是外表，而是毅力 (grit)。

So I left the classroom, and I went to graduate school to become a psychologist. I started studying kids and adults in all kinds of super challenging settings, and in every study my question was, who is successful here and why? ... In all those very different contexts, one characteristic emerged as a significant predictor of success. And it wasn't social intelligence. It wasn't good looks, physical health, and it wasn't IQ. It was grit.

• girt 有两个含义，一个是具象含义，指「沙粒」，另一个则是指「坚毅」
• 同近义替换：determination，persistence，另外，文章中还用了 perseverance 和 stamina，避免措辞上的重复
• 去年考研作文主题是「坚持」，很多同学不会 perseverance，拼写出错的大有人在，如果你知道 grit，那就好办多了。另外，也可以用 determination~

什么是毅力？

毅力不是看到一篇文章就热血上涌，立志明天就戒掉游戏和偶像剧，结果后天就歇菜的一时兴起，而是为了长期目标不断付出、不断努力的坚持，「日拱一卒无有尽，功力唐捐亦不弃」的决心。

下面这段很适合背诵。

Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it's a marathon, not a sprint.

• 英文释义：If you stick with something, you do not change to something else 坚持（做某事，尤指困难的事情）
• If you stick with it , your playing will gradually get better.
• 如果坚持下去的话，你的演奏水平会逐步提高的。

day in, day out

• continuously for a long time in a way that is annoying or boring 日复一日，天天地
• 同近义替换：day after day

marathon：马拉松

sprint：短跑

几年过后，Angela 开始专门研究学生们的毅力情况，在数千名初中生中，经过一年多的跟踪调研，她的观点再次被证实：毅力很强的学生，毕业率有绝对优势。

于是每天都有很多家长、老师询问她，「怎么样才能培养孩子们的毅力？」Angela 说，有一点可以确定，有才华，不代表有毅力。你天赋异禀，天生骄傲（对，我是在说老罗），但这并不代表你就一定会有毅力，一定能获得成功。

那，是不是说培养毅力就没招了？也不是。斯坦福大学 Carol Dweck 提出了「成长型思维模式」growth mindset 的概念（跟你讲哦，四六级阅读还专门选过一篇讲 growth mind 的文章）。他认为，当我们学习有关大脑的相关知识，了解应对挫折时大脑做出的反应，我们会更容易坚持下去。

失败是暂时的，学习能力是能随着努力程度而变化的。

不过有些遗憾的是，关于 how to become gritty 和 growth mindset 的内容，Angela 讲得很少，作为结尾，有种话没说完的感觉，略显仓促。
