World Cancer Day
Cancer kills about 10 million people per year, representing 1 out of 6 deaths worldwide. A large majority of these deaths happen in low- or middle-income countries. As such, the importance of increasing research and raising awareness on this type of disease should not be understated.
In 2000, a global initiative established World Cancer Day on 4 February to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its identification, prevention, and treatment, through medical research, health information campaigns, and assistance to patients and their relatives.

Belgium is at the forefront of research in fighting this illness and helping people who suffer or have suffered from cancer to lead a better life.
For example, UCLouvain has recently achieved breakthroughs in the fight against breast cancer, the Antwerp University hospital is now researching an innovative ultra-fast cancer treatment called flash therapy, and a team from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel is attempting to restore fertility to men who’ve been treated for cancer in their youth and have as such seen their fertility decrease drastically.
Did you know? The Belgian company Barco, a world leader in medical imaging, provides advanced diagnostic monitors that help Chinese hospitals better diagnose breast cancer, among others!
